Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is a place of captivating beauty and deep ecological significance. The park takes its name from Lake Manyara, a shallow alkaline lake that covers nearly two-thirds of its area. The name “Manyara” originates from the Maasai word “emanyara”, referring to the Euphorbia tirucalli plant traditionally used to build protective enclosures around Maasai homesteads.

In the early 20th century, European settlers were drawn to the area’s fertile lands and rich wildlife. However, increasing human activity began to threaten the delicate balance of this ecosystem. Recognizing the need for protection, the area was first declared a Game Reserve in 1957, and later established as a National Park in 1960.

Since then, Lake Manyara has gained global recognition for its tree-climbing lions, vast flocks of flamingos, and diverse habitats ranging from groundwater forests to open plains. It was also one of the first parks to be visited by famous conservationist Bernard Grzimek, who helped promote its ecological importance.
